Golf Ball Numbers – The Truth Revealed
Aesthetic? Tradition? Functionality? While nearly every golf ball has a number on it, most golfers couldn't tell you why. Golf ball numbers vary from brand to brand and range from one to the hundreds. Here's the truth:
- Single Digit Golf Ball Numbers – A single digit on a golf ball is most likely there for identification purposes. For example, if a foursome is playing the same ball, they would each use a ball with a different number to help distinguish one from the other. (Or, mark their balls with a pen.) Traditionally, single digits range from one to four.
- Double Digit Golf Ball Numbers – Two digits typically indicate compression rating. For example, a number between 70 and 100. However, very few ball manufacturers use this system today. A low compression produces a softer ball, ideal for high handicappers. A high compression golf ball is ideal for more experienced players or golfers with a fast swing speed.
- Triple Digit Golf Ball Numbers – Three-digit numbers, 100s excluded, typically indicate the number of dimples on the golf ball.
Golf Ball Numbers – We Break the Rules
In 2002, we introduced the Strata Tour Ace. It redefined 4-piece technology. Its new high-coverage dimple pattern produced staggering length, while the shear resistant urethane cover provides exceptional spin and accuracy. And, to make it truly unique, we replaced the traditional identification number on each ball with playing card suits.
Six years later, we unveiled the Freak. We added Dimple In Dimple™ Aerodynamics. Created a lightning-fast, high-velocity core for hot ball speed. And reduced driver spin. It's Top-Flite's longest ball ever, so it made sense to slap a huge number on it. Freak details include:
- Seamless Dimple In Dimple™ Aerodynamics – Designed to generate Ideal Flight Trajectory, this unique aerodynamic surface maintains spin longer throughout flight, allowing the ball to hold its line and maintain lift longer without ballooning. Most power distance golf balls lose spin at the apex of flight, decreasing speed. When they lose lift and knuckleball out of the sky, it sacrifices distance. Dimple In Dimple™ Aerodynamics helps maintain spin at the apex, delivering maximum distance through superior design rather than hard compression for a wide range of swing speeds. It‘s the kind of distance that will send your buddies home crying to their mommies.
- High–Velocity Core – Optimized to produce ball speeds that go right up to the allowable limit. Also lowers spin off the driver.
- Ionomer Cover – Technologically advanced ionomer provides increased resiliency to generate optimal ball speed for maximum distance.
Golf Ball Numbers – Recap
A single-digit number is for identification. A double-digit number is all about compression. A triple-digit number reflects the number of dimples. That is, unless it's a Top-Flite golf ball.
